Spirit Island is also the only board game I've started upgrading, doing little projects to make blights look more evil and replacing tokens etc. I brought the box home and already knew all the rules from watching the videos and just dove right in. That's what pushed me to make my purchase to begin with because it seemed so cool. I'd also recommend watching a youtube tutorial explaining the rules and showing some gameplay of the physical version. I bought my copy of Spirit Island primarily to play solo, and have brought it out and played 6-7 games with friends as well, and am patiently waiting for the expansion to arrive so I can play solo with the new spirits. If you're interested in trying it out to see if you like it then sure, grab the app, but it's a board game first and I think the design shines beautifully in how it makes you feel like you're playing something so more in depth than you would expect a board game to give you. The rules are complicated at first but once you have a handle over them you can breeze through turns pretty quickly. Raise your own dragon and use its powers in. Form alliances with other players and take part in PvP battles. Develop and defend your own private castle and conquer enemy lands. Large-scale battles among massive armies.
